Positive Thinking and Affirmations - Are We Deluding Ourselves?

About positive thinking and affirmations – the naysayers would have you believe that practicing the art of positive thinking is not as beneficial as you think.  They say that you are deluding yourself with positive affirmations and that you should wake up and face reality.  I would definitely have to disagree with those of you who have this mindset concerning the benefits of positive thinking.

Positive thinking and affirmations are not in any way a means of deluding yourself when concerning reality.  It is just that you are choosing to see things in a different manner than you normally might.  This does not mean that you are denying that a negative situation exists, but it means that you choose to try and gain something from the experience by examining and searching for the benefits.

For example, suppose you had a REALLY crappy boss who was always riding you and dumping his work in your lap.  There is no denying that the situation sucks, but is there something that can be derived from all of this that is positive?  Perhaps all the work that you are doing is leading to new skills that will be extremely beneficial and will help you move up or move on.  There is no point to constantly whining about the situation – learn what you can from it and move on.  That is choosing to focus on the positive.

Another example that positive thought works is in the area of meditation and prayer.  There have been scientific studies done showing that in cases where prayer and meditation are used that patients tend to heal faster and have more positive outlook on life.  Is this just a coincidence? No, it just proves that daily positive thinking is helpful in our lives.

It is true that whatever you think about is what you attract in your life.  Ever notice how when you focus on what can go wrong that something inevitably goes wrong?  And think about when you wake up with the attitude that it is going to be a great day… Ever notice how you feel so much better, even if things do not go entirely your way?  That’s the power of positive thought.

Positive thinking and affirmations are a means of helping us to cope in a world that seems to have gone crazy and also a means to attract more of what we desire in life.  Maybe if more people practiced the art of positive thinking, we could resolve some of our world issues in a more humane manner.  And what’s wrong with that?
